Why ChatGPT Should Be Your Assistant, Not Your Ghostwriter

ChatGPT has impressed the masses. From being your own personal therapist to meal planning the last few items you have in your pantry, the large language model helps almost everyone with at least some mundane tasks in their day-to-day life.

Certainly, some can take AI usage a bit too far. We’ve all come across content that immediately feels robotic and soulless, always including the telltale “game-changing” language prominent in ChatGPT outputs. Many businesses choose to use articles entirely created by ChatGPT and post them as part of their SEO and content strategies.

As a writer, of course this rise of the GPT was a bit worrisome, as it might make us obsolete.

However, the value of real writers is evident, not only because Google seeks out AI-generated content and penalizes you for it, but because human touch is necessary for your content. At iNet, we extensively research, meet with and get to know our clients so we can nail your brand tone, leverage your goals, and tailor your content to your audience.

ChatGPT is a great assistant though, and we use it as a tool to make us more efficient and to do a little of the heavy lifting.

How to Use ChatGPT as an Assistant

AI is an incredibly powerful tool for brainstorming and organizing, and it helps us enhance our writing.

The Brain Dump

Sometimes, writer’s block is a real problem; sometimes, we have so many ideas that we don’t know where to start. Jotting down all your thoughts and ideas into ChatGPT to provide clarity can be extremely helpful. Making sense of the chaos can give us a starting point to create a fantastic piece of content for your business.

The Simplifier

As a digital marketing agency, no industry is off-limits. Some industries can be highly technical and challenging to understand for someone who isn’t trained in that field. Along with our extensive research and getting to know our clients, ChatGPT can help explain white papers, product descriptions, processes, and other supporting documents in a digestible way. This allows us to become more familiar with your business and explain what you do in a way your audience will understand.

The Helper

ChatGPT can help solve problems by suggesting alternative names, generating examples, or brainstorming ideas. One of my favourite prompts is to ask it to provide some kinesthetic words to help me be more descriptive in my writing. It’s perfect for when you’re stuck and need a fresh perspective.

The Outliner

When you need a comprehensive outline for an article or you need to work out the details of the big picture, ChatGPT is a master. It can provide heading ideas and points you should discuss and gives a great ‘birds-eye-view’ of what your article should look like, helping you adjust if needed and keeping you on topic.

The Refortmater & Summarizer

Anyone who uses ChatGPT regularly knows that it loves a good list. However, you don’t want your entire article to be heading, list, heading and list. Ask ChatGPT to reformat content you’ve created or summarize larger sections; it does a great job. If you feel like you’re being too wordy, you can ask it to make that section more concise or expand upon ideas you may have.

The Devil’s Advocate

When you need a perspective shift or are fleshing out a preliminary idea, ChatGPT can be the devil’s advocate of your dreams. Asking it questions like “What potential drawbacks or challenges might arise from ________, and how might they impact the user?” “Read this article and tell me what I am missing.” Asking disconfirming questions helps to point out blind spots that you may not have otherwise noticed.

5 Tips for Using ChatGPT as an Assistant

  1. Double-check all sources and studies. ChatGPT has been known to get a little creative with the studies they cite, and in some cases, they are true works of fiction.
  2. Be specific in your prompts and provide clear, detailed instructions to get the most relevant and accurate responses. The more information and context you can give, the better.
  3. Use ChatGPT to create outlines, categorize ideas, or prioritize tasks to save time and stay focused. Automate repetitive activities like summarizing text, formatting content, or drafting generic emails.
  4. Request multiple suggestions or ideas to inspire your creativity and consider alternative approaches.
  5. Use ChatGPT responsibly by ensuring transparency about its involvement in your work and avoiding over-reliance.
