Mobile First Indexing – What Does It Mean?

Mobile First Indexing – What Does It Mean?

After years of using a desktop as the primary source to access the internet, mobile searches have overtaken desktop search by nearly 2 to 1. With that ‘not-so-surprising’ stat, Google is now prioritizing your mobile version of your website to index you. Even though this was announced back in August 2017, we’re only just starting to see mobile indexing now (Oct 2018)!

This is what Google had to say.

“To recap, our crawling, indexing, and ranking systems have typically used the desktop version of a page’s content, which may cause issues for mobile searchers when that version is vastly different from the mobile version. Mobile-first indexing means that we’ll use the mobile version of the page for indexing and ranking, to better help our – primarily mobile – users find what they’re looking for.” View link here

What Does This Mean For Your Website?

Well, if your website is fully responsive (Changes layout to match the screen of a mobile), then don’t be too worried. It just means that Google is looking at this version first. Some companies opt to show different content for mobile users, cutting out valuable body text and images to reduce the amount of content a mobile user sees. If you’re doing this, then consider what sections you’re dropping, does the section contain important keywords that relate to your service or product offering.

As Google now has a different rank for mobile as it does for desktop (maybe dropping desktop indexing in the near future??), your ranking may drop for mobile users. Googles Gary Illyes kept repeating on stage when he was being bombarded with questions about this News, “Is your site fully responsive? If so, you’re fine!” So, is your site fully responsive?

Just To Be Clear.

This only affects mobile users when making a mobile search on Google, it does not affect your ranking if using a desktop. Well, for now anyway!
